Microsoft Announces Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2, and New Surface Studio

Microsoft unveils the Surface Pro 6

Microsoft on Tuesday officially unveiled new devices under its Surface brand, while at the same time welcoming back a returning color option for the whole lot.

Microsoft has just unveiled this year’s updates for the Surface Pro, the Surface Laptop, and a brand new iteration of the Surface Studio. In each case the updates appear to be pretty minor in scope, but are consistent upgrades when compared to the models these new units will be replacing. What’s more, Microsoft is also introducing a new Matte Black color scheme for each of the new models as well.

First up, the Surface Pro 6 (pictured at the top of this article). This is a minor update insofar that the outside of the machine looks very familiar to the last iteration of the device, and it even includes last year’s input options, which means there still isn’t any support for USB-C on the Surface Pro 6. The new Surface Pro 6 weighs in at 1.6 pounds, and the display still measures in at 12.3 inches.

Microsoft did redesign the inside of the new device, though, improving its cooling so that the Surface Pro 6 can support quad-core processors under the hood. The battery life is improved, too, now lasting 13.5 hours on a single charge. Models can be equipped with up to 16GB of RAM.

The new Surface Pro 6 starts at $899 and Microsoft says it goes on sale beginning Tuesday, October 16.

The new Surface Laptop 2 from Microsoft

Next, the Surface Laptop 2. Just like the Surface Pro 6, this new model will also boast the matte black color option. Microsoft says this is the “thinnest LCD ever” on a laptop, and the company says the new model is 85 percent faster when compared to the first-generation device. Pricing starts at $899, and there are no USB Type-C ports on the device. Microsoft says battery life is unchanged from the previous model, sitting at 14 and a half hours on a single charge. It supports eighth-generation Intel processors.

The Surface Laptop 2 goes on sale Tuesday, October 16. Pre-orders go live starting today.

Microsoft unveils the Surface Studio 2

And finally, the Surface Studio 2. The company is already touting this as the “fastest Surface ever”, part of which is due to the new 2TB SSD under the hood. The Surface Studio 2 starts off at $3,500 with an Intel i7 Kaby Lake processor, the aforementioned built-in storage option, and 16GB of RAM.

The display measures in at 27.5 inches, and it is 38 percent brighter than the previous generation’s screen, along with 22 percent more contrast. The new display supports over 4,000 levels of pressure sensitivity with the Surface Pen, which also supports tilt functionality for the stylus.

No word on when the Surface Studio 2 will launch, though. The company says it’s “coming soon”, but that’s about it for now.

Any of these new devices seem appealing to you?
